Welcome to the Best Football Club in Freetown

Freetown Football Club is a Sierra Leone football club formerly known as Black Stars Football Club which was formed in 2010. Black Stars Football Club was acquired on June 1, 2020 by Joe Ernest Briggs in honour of the Ernest Francis Briggs family’s exemplary lifestyle of peace, unity and stability. Freetown Football Club is a club dedicated to providing players with opportunities to play and develop their football skills and talents in view of giving them a sense of belonging to a family that they can call their own. It’s a club that brings families together to share their passion, stories, talents and aspirations with the community. The current President, Dr. Comfort Briggs-Anigbo is a retired lecture at Washington University.

We compete in the Eastern Regional Football League 1st Division under Kenema Football Association. The Eastern Regional Football Association 1st Division consists of 24 Provincial Clubs in the league. The top two teams in the league join other top two teams each from the other 4 regions, for playoffs to get promoted to the Premier League in Sierra Leone. At the end of the play-offs, three teams qualify to be promoted to the Premier League.

On the 21st day of December, 2020, the name Black Stars FC was officially changed to Freetown FC. Due to the Covid 19 pandemic all games were suspended. The SLFA used the opportunity to overhaul and create fresh requirements that all clubs must meet to be eligible to participate in the preliminary tournament, which produced clubs that would compete in the 2021/2022 Season. Freetown FC was able to meet and surpass the requirements.

In the 2021/2022 Season, Freetown FC won all home and away games to win the Eastern Region Preliminaries tournament organised by Kenema Football Association, which is a member of Eastern Region Football Association. In the regular season of the Division 1 League of 10 teams, Freetown FC stayed No.1 from Week 1 to Week 18; won 10 games, drew 7 games and lost just one game to win the Regional Championship and qualified first for the playoffs. As Champions of the preliminary tournament Freetown FC was the best of 4 teams that made the cut from Kenema District, and joined 6 other clubs to compete in the Eastern Region Division One League proper.

The playoffs consisted of 10 teams from the 5 regions of the Division 1 Leagues. That is each Region’s Champion and Runner-up. The ten teams were now split into two groups of 5 teams each. Freetown FC finished 3rd in Group 1, and didn’t therefore qualify for the Premier League.

To start its first season, Freetown FC conducted open camps between April and May, 2021 in 8 provinces to select players. 22 players were eventually selected during a month long training period between May and June, 2021. A few players were also bought from other West African countries like Côte d’Ivoire and Nigeria to increase the squad to 26 players at the start of the season. As at Week 13, Freetown FC was the only club unbeaten (nine wins and four draws) in all the 5 regions consisting of 50 clubs with 10 clubs participating in each of the 5 regions.

The Freetown FC coach is Charles Tonye Jack, a foreign coach with an ‘A’ License from the Asian Football Confederation. The Team Manager, Christian Lamin Conteh was a former Sierra Leone national team captain and legend, who sadly died during the season. Between the Coach and Team Manager, they instilled discipline and good practice into the players. The players adhered to the camp rules and all other rules throughout the season, except for three players, who came short and were expelled and had their contracts terminated.

Freetown FC is a well structured club. Discipline is key in our operations giving the players room to learn and develop their skills and talents. All players are provided with training kits, training equipment and all basic tools needed to train them. And all players have health insurance.
